On my development laptop, I use FireFox almost solely for work related needs. For example, I've set the homepage for FireFox to point to my work's bug tracking website. However, I also wanted Firefox to open the same bug tracking page when I open a new tab. Unfortunately, the Firefox preferences panel doesn't have the option to do what I want to do.

Fortunately for me, it is still possible; and here is how I set the URL that gets opened in a new tab on Firefox.

Making Firefox do what I want

  1. Enter "about:config" into the URL field
  2. Click on the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button
  3. *
  4. Search for "browser.newtab.url"
  5. Right click on the "browser.newtab.url" preference and a small menu will appear; select "Modify" from the menu
  6. A dialog box will appear that allows one to enter the URL to appear when a new tab is created
  7. rejoice!

Hopefully this saves someone a bit of time.

Prove you are human by solving a math problem! I'm sorry, but due to an increase of blog spam, I've had to implement a CAPTCHA.
